Inside Volunteer Duties
Making sure our wildlife friends have fresh food, water and a clean comfortable place to rest are our top priorities as their care takers. Medical attention is just as important and is the task of the shift leads.
Our wild brothers and sisters need your help. Below is information about what your duties would be. Thank you for caring.
Prior to starting your volunteering, you will need to fill out our Volunteer Release Form and do at least one training day.
The inside area is for injured animals who need medical attention and time to recover before they can go into a larger outside area. Babies stay inside until they are big and strong enough to live outside.
Each recovery area has the animal species on the door so you know who is inside and what kind of food to prepare. At the kitchen area, there is an easy to follow guide for making the food and the amounts needed. There is always someone who will gladly answer your questions while you're learning the routine.
Preparing meats, fruits and vegetables is most of the work. Some animals require special formulas for nutritional reasons. Any special diets are clearly marked on their recovery area.
During baby season which is usually March to September, there is feeding and caring for the orphaned animals. It is very busy making sure all babies are fed on schedule. It is important that their routine is consistent.
Cleaning of all the recovery areas is a daily duty. The animals are gently taken out and placed in a temporary holding bin while their area is wiped down and set up with clean bedding and fresh food and water.
There are check lists to mark off as you finish each area. We always encourage asking questions, this is the best way to learn.
You will be taught how to handle each animal in a safe manner and will never be asked to handle anything you are not comfortable with.
We ask that you are consistent with your weekly volunteer time and please always let us know, in advance, if you can't make your scheduled shift.
We are willing to teach you as much as you are willing to learn. We could not operate without the help of our volunteers and we appreciate them very much!
