Babies, Bears, And A New Building

Giving Tuesday Give Wild

Here we are again, approaching the holidays and today is #GivingTuesday. Over the last year, we have taken in thousands of patients and your support makes it possible for us to care for the animals brought to our facility. Whether it is a tiny hummingbird or a large bear cub, we have the staff and expertise to care for all species. Annually, we see over 135 different species of wildlife at our center. Songbirds, raptors, waterfowl, amphibians, reptiles, and both large and small mammals – each requires specialized diets, medical protocols, caging, and diagnostics.

While most of our patients arrive in the spring and summer, the fall and the winter months are still busy. We received a couple very late “babies” in the past week. These orphaned Virginia Opossums were found lost and wandering alone. They likely fell off their mother’s back and with the cold temperatures, these babies will now stay with us all winter.

We also took in two orphaned bear cubs from Chelan last week. Sadly, their mother was shot, but these two were able to be captured for rescue. The homeowners had seen them together with the mother routinely in their yard. Washington Department of Fish and Wildlife was able to capture the two orphans and brought them to us. They will be here all winter and then released back into their territory next spring.

After 41 years, it is time for us to build a new wildlife hospital. We are fortunate to have the space on our property for this project and we can continue to use the old medical clinic while constructing the new hospital. We also must upgrade our electrical, water main, and septic system. As you can imagine, we have outgrown the old building and infrastructure. We are raising $2 million dollars and your contributions during our #GivingTuesday fundraiser will help make this possible. Check out the video of this Capital Campaign on our YouTube channel.
